Newlywed Couple Killed in Massive Sidewalk Sinkhole in Southwest China

A father, his 11-year-old son, and a newlywed couple who were married just a few days earlier, have been confirmed dead after being swallowed by a massive sidewalk sinkhole in southwest China.

 

The tragic accident happened on Sunday in the city of Dazhou, Sichuan province, China. Around 400 rescuers and 100 excavators were called to the scene to search for victims that fell into the sinkhole. It is is believed to be at about 10 square meters (32 feet) in diameter and nearly 16 meters (52 feet) deep, according to South China Morning Post.

 

Rescuers first recovered the remains of the woman past midnight of Monday, Shanghaiist reported. She was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital. Her husband, however, wasn’t found until later that morning at 9 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bride’s father, only identified by his surname as Mu, told the media that the 23-year-old couple just tied the knot on Oct. 3, just four days before the gruesome accident in Dazhou city. They both live in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, where the woman works as a nurse and the man as a courier.

Just as they were about to board the bus back to their home city, the couple reportedly decided to buy wedding candies for their colleagues and friends back home.

The remains of the 45-year-old father and his 11-year-old son weren’t found until Tuesday at 3:50 p.m., as said in reports.

Tang, the father’s eldest son who works as an auxiliary police officer in Dazhou, told the media that he was talking to him over the phone right before the accident. However, the line suddenly cut, and could not reconnect.

“They did no wrong, they were just walking on the street,” the man said.

Footage from the rescue mission showed how the sinkhole collapsed as rescuers tried to recover the bodies of the victims.

The initial investigation by authorities state that the accident was caused by the collapse of an underground culvert due to several days of rainfall that hit city.
