DAP postpones AGM in Pahang, allowing members to attend Lynas review

The DAP central leadership has postponed its state annual general meeting in Pahang to Nov 25 so that its members can attend the public hearing on the review of Lynas on Sunday, Nov 11.

Pahang DAP secretary Lee Chin Chen (photo) told Malaysiakini that this came after the state committee sent a request to DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke, asking for permission to postpone the AGM, which was scheduled to be held on Nov 11.

In a statement released today, Lee said that he hoped that Pahang DAP members and supporters would attend the hearings.

"The people from Raub and Bentong will rent a bus to Kuantan to attend the hearing, and we hope that more people will come to stand with us to oppose Lynas," he said.

Lee added that Pahang DAP has been opposing Lynas since seven years ago and the Australian mining company, in the past few years, has proved that it is unable to appropriately dispose of its hazardous waste.

Pahang DAP, he said, has not changed its position that the Lynas rare earth processing plant in Kuantan should be closed and will continue to pressure to all the agencies involved to protect the health of the people and the environment.

“Pahang DAP has instructed the local leaders to mobilise the residents to attend the public hearing and ensure that the government hears the voice of the people,” Lee added.

The public hearing session on the review of Lynas Corporation's rare earth processing plant (photo, below) will be conducted at 9am on Nov 11. The venue has been changed to Sri Manja Boutique Hotel in Bandar Indera Mahkota, Kuantan.

According to the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry, the public hearing session will be conducted to engage with all stakeholders, including Lynas Malaysia, NGOs, government agencies, environmental experts, public health experts and radiation experts.

Only those who have pre-registered online may attend the public hearing and the registration is now closed.

According to the ministry, participants are required to be properly dressed and are forbidden from bringing banners, posters or other dangerous items.

For those who are unable to attend, the proceeding will be streamed live on the ministry’s Facebook page.

Lynas' Malaysian operations have been under scrutiny by the country's new government over concerns that its six-year-old plant that processes rare earth used in industrial magnets is harmful to the environment.

Putrajaya has since set up an executive committee to review operations of the Lynas plant and gave it until the end of this month to submit a report with recommendations for the government.

Lynas has denied producing any toxic waste and stated that the byproduct it produced was safely managed and can be "returned to the environment" through radioactivity dilution and dispersion. - Mkini
