Malaysia no longer in top 10 list of porn watchers, says report

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is no longer on the list of countries with the highest daily traffic to Pornhub, the largest video pornography site on the internet.

In 2017, the Canadian portal said Malaysian women ranked seventh among women who accessed Pornhub through mobile devices. According to the report, released on March 7 that year, 84% of Malaysian women and 66% of men browsed Pornhub using a mobile device.

However, female Malaysian visitors to Pornhub are now in the 10% to 29% percentile of female traffic to Pornhub, with 29% being the worldwide average.

In fact, Malaysia was missing in this year’s review report by Pornhub Insights, the website’s research and analysis arm, from not only the top 10 countries with the highest traffic on Pornhub but the top 20 as well.

The most viewed category of porn in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei is Asian porn, data shows.

While the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) banned Pornhub from as early as 2014, a quick Google search on “Malaysia porn website banned” also gives instructions on how to bypass the ban.

Downgraded versions of Pornhub videos are also available on other less popular porn sites, some of which have not been banned here.

Pornhub itself has its own VPNhub app on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, as well as for Windows and MacOS to bypass restrictions placed on adult websites.

Nevertheless, other websites continue to be “successfully blocked” each year by the Malaysian government.

Malaysian police have also set up a new unit to monitor Malaysians who watch porn online and pinpoint and locate in real time those who surf these websites.

This is seen as an attempt to stop child pornography from being uploaded or accessed, which Malaysia is also known for.

MCMC now says it does not conduct any surveillance or survey of pornographic websites on its own, especially those offering child pornography.

It only helps the police and other relevant authorities upon request in taking action against pornographic websites, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

MCMC also says that blocking porn sites would not do much to curb the curiosity of those who want to access such sites.

In 2014, Pornhub statistics showed those from the east coast of Malaysia’s peninsula spend the most time streaming online pornography on the website, with those in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, spending an average of 12 minutes and 58 seconds looking for visual smut.

Those in Kuala Lumpur came in second, recording 12:29 minutes, followed by internet users in Kota Bahru, Kelantan, and Miri, Sarawak who recorded average forays of 12:27 minutes each per visit.

All four Malaysian cities marked higher average Pornhub usage times than Malaysia itself (12:05 mins), which on its own was one of the highest in the Asean region. Pornhub attributed this at the time to internet users “looking for the right kind of videos”.

Pornhub vice-president Corey Price that year reportedly said it was also possible that the time periods could have been buffed by certain users watching one specific video for an extended amount of time.

The US continues to lead this year’s list by a landslide, followed by the UK, India, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Australia and the Philippines, with Mexico trailing behind.

Other countries on the list are Brazil, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Sweden, Argentina, Russia, and South Africa. Ukraine is the newest member in the top 20 list.

Collectively, all 20 countries make up 80% of daily traffic, Pornhub data shows.

Among Pornhub’s top 20 traffic countries, the Philippines has the highest proportion of female visitors at 38%, followed by 35% of both Brazil’s and South Africa’s traffic.

Countries such as Malaysia which are no longer on the list with the largest proportion of mobile use to access Pornhub by women include Pakistan, Ireland and New Zealand.

Other major data from this year’s Pornhub review report includes a whopping 100 million daily users visiting Pornhub, or 33.5 billion in 2018 so far, an increase of five billion visits from the year before.

This can be likened to the combined populations of Canada, Poland, and Australia.

While 12 new videos and two hours of content are uploaded to Pornhub every minute, Pornhub’s most-watched video of all time is still US reality television personality and socialite Kim Kardashian’s sex tape.

Pornhub’s top searches show US porn star Stormy Daniels as the first on the list of searches in 2018, and Fortnite, a popular game, as number two. -FMT
