Guan Eng attacks Pahang’s financial record as PH campaign intensifies

KUALA LUMPUR: As the Cameron Highlands campaign intensifies, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today attacked the Barisan Nasional-led Pahang state government, accusing it of misrepresenting its financial health by announcing a surplus budget every year.
“Due to the state’s weak financial management, Pahang cannot fulfil its debt obligations to the federal government, which is the highest among all states in Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.
He said as at Dec 31 last year, the state owed Putrajaya a total of RM3.178 billion, adding that Pahang had been recording deficit budgets from 2014 to 2017.
He said the figures showed weak financial management on the part of the state government.
“Can the Pahang state government undertake sustainable development with debt of RM3.2 billion that is the highest at the end of 2018, and with deficit budget every year, that comes to a collective deficit of -RM228 million at as end of 2017?” he asked.
His statement comes as both Pakatan Harapan and BN are locked in a showdown in Cameron Highlands, where the ruling coalition is trying to wrest the federal seat long held by BN.
BN is fielding Orang Asli candidate, former police officer Ramli Mohd Noor, while PH is fielding DAP’s M Manogaran. Two independent candidates are also vying for the seat.
A total of 247 early voters, mostly policemen, are voting today. -FMT
