PREPARE TO BE ARRESTED, LOKMAN & GANG: NAJIB SUPPORTERS WHO BASHED UP STUDENT PROTESTERS, ASSAULTED REPORTERS TO BE CHARGED – POLICE

Those involved in the fracas across the street from a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur where former premier Najib Abdul Razak was delivering a talk last Friday are expected to be charged soon.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim said investigation papers on the incident were submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers yesterday and a decision has been made.

“Follow up action to press charges against those who violated the law will be taken,” he told Malaysiakini.

He said the police recorded statements from 28 individuals over the incident.

The scuffle erupted after supporters of Najib confronted six Universiti Malaya (UM) students who were brandishing placards critical of the former premier. This included a clown-faced Najib cardboard cutout.

Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam, who led the supporters, tore the cardboard cutout.

During the commotion, a man had placed UM student leader Wong Yan Ke in a headlock and slapped him.

The man also attempted to drag Wong across a railing but Lokman and other supporters prevented him from doing so.

In a statement later, Lokman claimed that the man was a passerby who was upset with the students’ behaviour.

The Umno leader also said the students, whom he described as “DAP supporters”, should be thankful that Najib’s supporters had saved them from being beaten.

An Umno member also lodged a police report regarding the fracas and accused the students of provocation.

After the altercation, Lokman and another Umno grassroots leader had confronted two Malaysiakini interns, who were covering Najib’s talk.

The Umno pair were upset with Malaysiakini’s report on the fracas, physically and verbally abused the two interns.

The interns have since lodged a police report on the incident.
