MCA Youth: Govt must explain new imported used car tax

PETALING JAYA: MCA Youth has hit out at the Pakatan Harapan government for imposing a new tax on imported used cars.
Its chief Nicole Wong (pic) questioned whether the move was the “first step” to protect the proposed third national car project.
“The government must come clean on this new tax scheme, just like how it was with Proton during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s tenure as the fourth prime minister,” she said in a statement.
According to reports, Wong said imposing between 20% and 39% tax on imported used cars effective March 1, would only discourage Malaysians from buying foreign-made cars.
“Without a doubt, this move will further drive foreign investments away from Malaysia,” she said, chiding the government for denying the people’s right to own foreign-made cars.
She also took a swipe at the Pakatan government for backtracking on its promise not to abuse public funds.
Citing the announcement by Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof allocating RM20mil to develop the prototype for the third national car, Wong questioned why the authorities were bent on fulfilling the personal ambition of Dr Mahathir despite public objections.
“Amid ailing economy and the Malaysian ringgit being labelled as ‘Asia’s worst performer’ by Bloomberg, the government should be taking measures to revitalise our economy and attract more foreign investors,” she said.- Star
