Najib, Arul Kanda joint trial on 1MDB audit report set for Nov
The trial against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and 1MDB ex-president Arul Kanda Kandasamy over the alleged tampering of the state fund's audit report will commence in November.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court fixed the joint trial to take place from Nov 18 to Nov 29, as well as from Jan 13 to Jan 17 next year.
High Court judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan made the ruling this morning after both counsels of the accused agreed to have a joint trial.
N Sivananthan appeared for Arul, while Najib was represented by Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.
Both Arul and Najib were present before the latter proceeded to another court for the criminal trial involving SRC International Sdn Bhd.
DPP Fatnin Yusof informed the court that approximately 25 to 30 witnesses will be summoned throughout the trial.
The judge fixed Aug 29 for case mention.
Najib and Arul were initially charged separately on Dec 12 last year.
Najib was charged with receiving gratification in the form of protection from ethical, civil or criminal actions against him as a public officer in relation to 1MDB, by ordering the alteration of the draft audit report before it was presented to the Public Accounts Committee.
He allegedly committed the offence between Feb 22 and 26, 2016, at the Prime Minister’s Department in Putrajaya.
Arul, meanwhile, was charged with abetting Najib in the offence during the same period of time. - Mkini
