I didn’t issue statement backing Anwar and Azmin, says Baru
KUCHING: Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian yesterday denied issuing a statement of support for party president Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy Mohamed Azmin Ali as well as claims that he had done so from fear of losing his position in the state leadership council.
“I don’t know where they received this sort of information, but if you read the statement carefully, you’ll notice that I was not the one who issued the statement.
“The statement was issued by the party’s state leadership council committee and signed by 24 people,” he told reporters after a Sarawak Pakatan Harapan dinner event here last night.
On Saturday, more than 20 Sarawak PKR divisional leaders declared their support for both Anwar and Azmin.
A divisional leader in Sarawak PKR who wanted to remain anonymous accused Baru of acting out of fear in issuing a statement of support for Anwar and Azmin despite saying that he would “never sign any letter”.
“Baru is scared of losing control over his post. It’s because he’s basically afraid of losing his position and authority in the state leadership council,” he said.
The tension in PKR arose following the posting of video clips showing two men engaged in sexual acts.
Former PKR divisional youth leader Haziq Aziz claimed to be one of the men, and alleged that the other was Azmin, an accusation which Azmin has denied.
Police declared that the video clips were most likely authentic but that the identity of the persons could not be verified.
Anwar had said that Azmin should step down as economic affairs minister if the clips proved to be genuine.
This sparked a sharp response from Azmin, who told Anwar to look at “the man in the mirror”.
