Zero seats in Sabah - 'Similar fate awaits PAS in GE15 if it doesn't get tough'
PAS is prone to seeing seats for contest taken by its coalition members if it continues to have an "incompetent team" as evident in its failure to negotiate an allocation for the Sabah snap polls, says an analyst.
Ilham Centre head of research Mohd Yusri Ibrahim reminded PAS that it could find itself victimised in the coming general election if it is not firm in regard to seat distribution.
"Each party will be more cunning (licik) and they will have their own strategy to ensure they obtain the maximum number of seats to contest.
"If the team to negotiate the seats is not competent as shown in the Sabah state election, once again, they will become the victims when it comes to seat distribution in the 15th general election (GE15)," he told Malaysiakini.
PAS is not contesting in the Sabah state election despite previously eyeing 10 constituencies. They were not invited to Perikatan Nasional's (PN) candidate announcement on Sept 10.
For the record, PN is a loose coalition involving Bersatu that is backed by PAS. At the same time, PAS is also an Umno ally through the Muafakat Nasional alliance that was formed earlier.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had explained that although PAS had initially insisted on contesting in the election, it eventually heeded to party president Abdul Hadi Awang's view to "give way" to its allies, amid disappointment by party members.
Hadi had said that the party conceded to its friends in the spirit of cooperation and to ensure straight fights for each of the state seats.
Yesterday, a PAS Youth muktamar had approved a motion which called for the party to contest at least 50 seats in the next general election.
Mohd Yusri opined that PAS had obtained short-term benefits from its political cooperation with its allies in the form of ministerial and GLC positions.
"PAS had gained short-term benefits through its cooperation with PN and Muafakat. Recently, it has become an opportunist party," he said.
This short-term gain, however, has eroded the trust of the public and party members in PAS who viewed the party as having a principle.
"Among the middle class and educated groups, they see that PAS has shaken its values when it joined hands with Umno and Bersatu," he added.
Sabah polls seat allocation will influence PAS' demand in GE15
Meanwhile, Universiti Utara Malaysia political analyst Azizuddin Mohd Sani said the latest development in Sabah concerning the Islamist party will influence its demand for seats in the coming general election.
"PAS may have accepted the decision as it is not influential in Sabah.
"But PAS may use the situation (of not obtaining any seat) to demand more seats in the Peninsular in GE15," he told Malaysiakini.
Azizuddin viewed that PAS had achieved its objective by becoming part of the federal government and in helming three states namely Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah.
"Perhaps its next move is to expand its influence in other states," he added.
In the last general election, PAS, contesting as a third force, fielded 155 candidates in parliamentary seats of which it won 18. - Mkini
