15 individuals investigated under OSA since 2010
KUALA LUMPUR: Fifteen individuals were investigated under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972 between 2010 and last year, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said of the total, four were charged with the offence.
“Two of the individuals were charged at the Kuala Kangsar Sessions Court and their cases are ongoing, while the other two individuals were charged in the Seremban Sessions Court, but were acquitted and discharged of the charge on April 16 last year.
“The prosecution had filed an appeal on the court’s decision in acquitting them, and the hearing was fixed at the Seremban High Court on March 25 and April 7 this year,” she said.
Azalina was responding to a question by Datuk Dr Johari Mat who wanted to know the number of people who had been charged for leaking government information.
Azalina said although there were more incidents involving leakage of government information, the challenge was that the existing laws did not cover leakage of information through information technology.
She said the Chief Government Security Office (CGSO) had a hard task gathering information if the government secret or information was leaked through technology application.
Hence, the need for existing laws to be amended to protect government secrets and information, she added. — Bernama
