Police uncover syndicate specialising in cloned credit cards
KUALA LUMPUR: The police have uncovered a foreign-linked syndicate specialising in cloned credit cards, with the arrest of 20 people, including its alleged mastermind.
According to Bukit Aman’s CCID anti-money laundering department head, SAC Khalil Azlan Chik, the suspects were detained during the Ops Helang 2/15 raids conducted from Saturday until Monday, in Ipoh and the Klang Valley.
The suspects comprised 17 men, two women and a Nigerian national, aged between 19 and 42.
“A total of 2,371 credit cards from local and international banks, believed to be cloned were seized in the raids.
“Also seized were equipment to process the credit cards, and valuables worth more than RM1 million,” he told a press conference at his office here yesterday.
Khalil said the modus operandi of the syndicate was to include the data of a credit card holder into a cloned credit card and given to its members, most of whom were unaware the card was cloned.
He said initial investigations revealed the syndicate had been active over the past five months, adding it had used a house in Cheras as its centre to process the cloned credit cards. — Bernama
