Experi-Men: Msian video explores male confidence with a twist

We Malaysian males are still somewhat leery of the idea of wearing makeup and embracing the feel-good positive body image philosophy. After all, it’s a lot more fashionable to be macho – but YouTuber, makeup artist, clothing line owner, and soon-to-be makeup label maven Pearl Tan has just released an amazing video that will take what you think you know about confidence and male identity and turn it on its head.

Titled ‘Beauty is confidence, confidence is beauty’, the video opens with three attractive young female models in an office. As the camera pans, it seems like a normal modeling/makeup video – until the hyper-lapse comes into play, and we watch the rapid deconstruction of these ‘models’ into who they really are – men.

While videos like this are not uncommon on YouTube, it is quite rare to see a production revolving around Malaysian men dabbling in women’s makeup and crossdressing (outside of a more scandalous context). As the general conversation opens up around equitable rights and equal treatment for both sexes, men, too, will begin to have a redefinition of what it means to be ‘comfortable in our own skin’ – and for the guys in the video to show us confidence, even while doing things that are taboo in our society, is a very refreshing thing indeed.

“I believe that it takes a certain level of confidence for people to carry themselves in every form they wish to be – and yet they are (still them)selves”, Pearl told us in a statement.

“For example, it takes a high level of being confident in your identity as a man to do this video, and each of them nailed it. They had fun and they were confident. As a makeup artist and working with fellow artistes and friends, the positive energy of confidence that exudes from each of them carrying themselves in every expression is simply beautiful,” she added.

“It is simply confidence, which all of us have – and to be able to add touches of beauty to confidence, and confidence to beauty for any man or woman is my greatest passion. To all the beautiful people out there: everyone is beautiful and confidently true.”
