RPK: Mahathir showing signs of desperation
PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is beginning to show signs of desperation in his quest to remove Prime Minister Najib Razak, says blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin.
In a posting on his Malaysia Today website, Raja Petra believes Mahathir has become defensive and less confident, in contrast to the “high and mighty” stance he had previously taken to give the impression that he was speaking from a position of the moral high ground.
This, Raja Petra said, was reflected in the statesman’s latest blog posting titled “The Citizens vs Najib”.
“Mahathir knows that the tide is turning and to arrest his declining fortunes he needs to salvage the situation by turning this whole thing into a ‘Rakyat versus Najib’ affair instead of ‘Mahathir versus Najib’.
“Mahathir is now cowering and hiding behind the rakyat, the same people he showed disdain for when he was in power for 22 years,” he said.
The Manchester-based blogger claimed Mahathir knew that he had to do some “hard selling”, but the public were not as gullible as Mahathir had thought just one year ago.
Raja Petra alleged that Mahathir’s key message in the blog post was that he was speaking on behalf of Malaysians and had the interests of the country’s 30 million people at heart, but he did not have the “moral right” to do so.
The blogger claimed this was because Mahathir, too, had wasted an estimated RM200 billion of the people’s money, half of which Mahathir purportedly was still keeping under trustees, nominees and proxies.
“The Islamic State also claims it is speaking on behalf of one billion Muslims as they murder those they consider enemies of Allah.
“Mahathir represents 30 million Malaysians as much as the Islamic State represents the one billion Muslims all over this world,” he said.
Raja Petra also pointed out the contradiction in Mahathir’s words, when the latter said he only wanted to bring down Najib and not the government, but at the same time said that to remove Najib, Umno and Barisan Nasional must lose the elections.
