Fox apologises for ‘X-Men’ posters showing Jennifer Lawrence being throttled
LOS ANGELES, June 4 — Film company 20th Century Fox has apologised after a promotional poster for X-Men: Apocalypse attracted controversy.
The poster depicted a scene from the film in which Jennifer Lawrence’s character Mystique is strangled by the film’s titular villain, as played by Oscar Isaac.
In some instances, it was accompanied by the tagline: “Only the strong will survive”.
According to The Guardian, Fox released a statement saying that by highlighting the villainy of Apocalypse, “we didn’t immediately realise the upsetting connotation of this image in print form”.
The studio confirmed that it was removing promotional materials with the image.
After apologising, Fox added it “would never condone violence against women,” The Guardian reported.

The poster was criticised by fans, who said that when taken out of context from the film, the image appeared to promote violence against women.
Among those who spoke out was actress and filmmaker Rose McGowan who described the poster as “offensive, and, frankly, stupid” to The Hollywood Reporter.
“There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film,” she was quoted as saying.
