Zaid tries to lure DAP away from PKR
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Pakatan Rakyat co-ordinator Zaid Ibrahim has revealed that he had met DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang to discuss proposals for the DAP to abandon its partnership with PKR and form a new opposition alliance involving the DAP and Amanah.
“I’ve met him. We had a friendly chat. It’s not for me to advise him. We were just discussing the political scenario,” Zaid said today after a public forum.
Zaid had raised the idea of the DAP splitting up with PKR last month, after the Sarawak elections, which were marked by competition between the two parties, who are partners with Amanah in the Pakatan Harapan alliance.
Zaid was then reported to have invited Lim to dinner to discuss whether there was a need for the DAP to continue its alliance with PKR because he felt that that it had not worked at the 2013 General Election and in Sarawak.
A former Umno minister, Zaid joined PKR in 2009 but left in 2010 after pulling out of the contest for the deputy presidency, alleging electoral fraud.
Of his meeting with Lim, Zaid said: “He’s a very seasoned politician. I am not in a position to advise him. But we had a good meeting about other matters.”
Zaid is part of the “Save Malaysia” campaign spearheaded by former premier Mahathir Mohamad which seeks to force Umno president and Prime Minister Najib Razak out of office. Lim and several opposition politicians have also allied themselves with the campaign. Earlier in the year, Lim called for the formation of a grand alliance of parties across the board to challenge the Barisan Nasional.
