  1. Keep Your Onions in Socks

If kept refrigerated, onions tend to sprout or rot. To keep them fresh for up to 8 months, store them in a pair of nylon stockings, tying a knot between each onion.  Keep them in a cool and dry place.

  1. Isolate Potatoes

Both potatoes and onions release gasses which stimulate faster spoilage. Never keep them close to each other or near apples and bananas.

Store potatoes in a paper bag in a dark place to prevent them from releasing a substance called solanine.

  1. Wash Your Berries

If you don’t wash the berries properly, they will become more prone to rot. Instead of rinsing them under water, soak them in a solution made of filtered water and vinegar in a 10-1 ratio. Soak them for about 5 minutes and then drain them in a strainer. This method kills of microorganisms which cause faster rotting.

  1. Don’t Refrigerate Honey

Instead of storing it in a refrigerator, keep it in a sealed jar in a dark place to avoid crystallization. Amazingly, archeologists have found a thousand year old honey which is still edible!

  1. Freeze Eggs

Cracking eggs into an ice-cube container and sprinkling some salt on each egg is one of the best ways to keep them fresh for an extended period of time while preventing freezer damage.

  1. Wrap Banana Stems

Many grocery stores wrap the banana stems with a cling wrap.  Separate them and rewrap each stem even if they are already wrapped.

This simple trick reduces the emission of ethylene, a gas which causes faster rotting process on other fruits placed next to the banana.

  1. Blanche Your Veggies

Blanching veggies before placing them into the freezer helps preserve nutrients for an extended period of time.

Cut them and boil them on high heat for about three minutes with constant stirring. Then, strain and soak them in a bowl with ice-cold filtered water for about 3 minutes. Drain once again and dry them with a cloth. Finally, put them in a bag and store in the freezer.

  1. Bag Tomato Sauce

Once opened, a jar of tomato sauce lasts only for a week. To extend its shelf life, freeze it.

All you have to do is to put your sauce in a freezer nag and freeze for an hour. Then, take it out from the freezer and separate the sauce into even squares with a knife. Put it back into the freezer, making sure you don’t damage any of the bags.

  1. Make Flavored Butter

Keeping herbs fresh in a refrigerator is almost impossible. Even though they have longer shelf life when place in a glass of water, they go rot after a week in a refrigerator.

However, herbs can last for a longer period of time when mixed with olive oil or butter and frozen. Wash and chop the herbs and then combine them with either olive oil or butter. Put them in an ice-cube tray and freeze during the night.  Store the cubes in a freezer bag in the morning.

Have you noticed that apples and bananas turn brown very quickly? If you have prepared a fruit plater and want to keep it fresh longer,  coat it with a mix of 2 parts water, 1 part fresh lemon juice, and 1 part honey.

  1. Wrap Lettuce

If kept in the fridge, lettuce gets lip only after a few days. Wrap it in paper towel, which absorbs excess moisture, to keep it fresh and crisp longer.

  1. Refrigerate Apples

Did you know that apples have longer shelf life when refrigerated? For optimal results, sanitize the drawer with vinegar and wash the apples thoroughly before refrigerating them. This will keep them fresh for up to 6 months.

  1. Bury Carrots

Due to the fact that carrots grow in sandy dirt, they can be stored in sand as well! Fill a container with some sand and burry the carrots inside. There is no need to clean them, but you need to remove the leaves. Keep the container in a well-ventilated area and make a breathable lid on the top.

  1. Freeze Minced Meat

Divide the meat into squares and then store in the refrigerator. The same method applies for chicken breast as well. Don’t re-freeze previously cooked meat.

  1. Turn Your Cream Upside Down

To prevent bacterial growth, store sour cream and cottage cheese lid-down! Make sure you close the lid tightly and cover with a plastic bag.

  1. Invest in Mason Jars

Did you know that mason jars are more durable than plastic food containers? Moreover, they are more versatile and come in various forms, such as juice bottles and lunch containers. You can use them as flower pots as well.

  1. Rewrap Store -Bought Cheese

If the cheese you buy is pre-wrapped, unwrap and re-package with waxed paper. This trick prevents sweating and keeps its taste.

  1. Turn Your Pineapple Upside Down

To extend the shelf life of your pineapple, remove its leaves and store it upside down in the fridge. This method redistributes the juice which has been pooled during the shipping process.

  1. Sprout Green Onions

Put green onions in a jar or glass on the kitchen counter. The best would be to place the bulb in an inch of water and exposed to sunlight. Change the water on a daily basis.
