Commotion at nasi kandar shop due to criminal intimidation

Mior Faridalathrash WahidGEORGE TOWN: The ruckus at a popular nasi kandar joint here last night was due to criminal intimidation, Northeast District Police Chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said.

This was after reports of two men alleged to have demanded money from the cashier of Restaurant Deen Nasi Kandar earlier this morning.

“We will conduct a full investigation into this and the case has been opened under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, not robbery. We are looking at all aspects,” he said when contacted.

In the 12.30am incident, two unidentified men caused a ruckus at the restaurant after an apparent request by the duo for money from the cashier was not entertained.

Restaurant operator Arshad Ali Mohd Baharudeen told NST Online that one of the men appeared to be enraged over a conversation at the cashier counter and later smashed the glass of the food counter.

He claimed the man demanded money from the cashier before going amok.

Arshad said his damages amounted to nearly RM10,000.

A video of the incident has gone viral on instant messaging app WhatsApp, fuelling speculation that it was an attempted robbery.
