Review: Low Kii Savage by Kiiara
Making her rounds recently on Spotify’s young-centric playlists is 21-year-old Kiiara. It’s easy to see why, really. The Illinois-born singer-songwriter makes the kind of music that’s so hipster chic, it would sound right at home at Cotton On.
But that’s also because Kiiara – born Kiara Saulters – knows how to navigate her way around sultry trap-style productions that revolve around casual flirtations and epic parties. They’re all decadent topics that will probably sit well with the twentysomething and below crowd.
There’s an offhand swag to the way Kiiara sings. It’s a heady brew of purrs and whispers that make numbers such as the bass-heavy Intention so effortlessly sexy.
Some numbers on this six-track offering verges on the bland and are forgettable at best. The last two songs – Say Anymore and Hang Up Tha Phone – are imitative of other far more super electropop numbers.
Elsewhere, the young singer keeps things to the absolute minimum. Opening number Gold employs simple stuttering electronic beats and muddy vocal delivery. It’s a formula that works best on Feels, a sublimely beautiful cut that shows that electronic can be ethereal too.
