V Shem-Wee Kiong aim to be among top five next year
PETALING JAYA, Aug 26 — Men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong are aiming to be in the top five in Badminton World Federation’s ranking next year.
After their success of climbing up to ninth place, an improvement of three rungs in the latest BWF rankings due to their silver medal achievement at the Rio Olympics, the duo also expressed their dream of becoming world number one.
Their confidence was boosted after defeating the world number one pair, Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong from South Korea, in the quarter-finals in Rio.
“If possible, we want to be in the top five as quickly as possible... it will not be easy but we will go all out. All players want to be the world number one... that is our target too, but we will go step by step,” said Wee Kiong.
Meanwhile, V Shem said although they won silver in Rio, they still have to maintain their consistency, confidence and improve their strategy in order to win many more championships.
They were met after receiving a RM60,000 cash prize from mobile service provider XOX Mobile for their Olympic achievement.
XOX Mobile also handed out RM110,000 to national shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei, in which RM60,000 was for his silver medal in the Men’s Singles and an additional RM50,000 as the ambassador for the brand.
Other Rio silver medallists were also given RM60,000 cash prize, including mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and the Women’s Synchronised 10m Platform pair Pandelela Rinong-Cheong Jun Hoong.
