“Before this, I had made a promise to my family that I wouldn’t neglect my studies, so after the Olympics, I think it’s time to focus on studying,” she told reporters after a ceremony held in appreciation of the national sporting heroes , organised by XOX Mobile here, today.

Pandelela is also expected to miss several diving competitions to be held in the near future, including the Fina Diving Grand Prix in Kuching this October.

Pandelela, who is studying Sports Science at the University of Malaya, is determined to finish her studies in 2018.

Meanwhile, her diving partner Cheong Jun Hoong also wants to recuperate from some niggling injuries.

“I want to rest my body to recover from some injuries, although it’s not serious. However, it is important (to recuperate) before beginning training again,” she said.

Jun Hoong believed that winning a medal in the just concluded Olympics did not promise anything for the Games next edition in Tokyo.

“The next Olympics (in 2020) will be a new tournament, and every competition will have different challenges and obstacles,” she said.

Earlier XOX Mobile handed out a total of RM315,000 in rewards to medal winners at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where shuttler Lee Chong Wei received a total of RM110,000 — RM60,000 for a silver medal and an additional RM50,000 for being the telco’s brand ambassador.

Other silver medal winners — badminton mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, and women’s 10m synchronised diving pair Pandalela Rinong-Cheong Jun Hoong — all received RM60,000 per pair, while Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, who won the bronze medal in the Keirin cycling event, received RM25,000.

However, Liu Ying, Peng Soon and Mohd Azizulhasni were not present at the event. — Bernama
