How many people have Anis Syafiqah courage, asks Zaid Ibrahim

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim today praised activist Anis Syafiqah for organising the #TangkapMO1 protest last Saturday, but wondered if there were many who share the courage shown by the 24-year-old student.

“Many are scared and some don’t even care what’s happening to the country. Apathy and indifference to political developments are common traits amongst the young, although that might change in the future,” said the former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, in a speech to students from the UK and Ireland yesterday.

Zaid was also pessimistic about Malaysia’s future following revelations last month by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) that billions of dollars had been stolen from 1MDB.

However, he said being pessimistic did not mean he chose not to do anything about it, but was just being realistic.

“It’s a reminder that while we must fight corruption, religious orthodoxy and the undemocratic forces ruling our country today, we must also be realistic about the difficulties and the dangers that are inherent in that task,” said Zaid.

But Zaid said the protest by students last Saturday in Kuala Lumpur showed there was still hope.

“The light at the end of the tunnel is the courage shown by our students, who dare to take to the streets and demand the arrest of the infamous Malaysian Official Number One.

“These young Malaysians can make all the difference if they have the numbers.”

Some 2,000 people gathered in central Kuala Lumpur to demand action against “Malaysian Official 1” (MO1), the reference used by DOJ in its documents detailing the embezzlement of funds from 1MDB. – Malaysia Dateline
