5 Amazing Bars Around Petaling Street You Absolutely Have to Check Out

Hidden among the shop-lots in Chinatown, finding the place is an adventure in itself. Look for the “Cheng and Huang Toys and Co.” signboard and you’ll be golden.

The building itself is a former brothel, home and warehouse thus, holds a lot of historical significance, which this bar is proud of. Just look at the colonial and pre-war antiques scattered and you’ll see what I mean.

PS150 mixes drinks with an almost laser-like focus on South East Asian flavours, so don’t be surprised when your menu has drinks like “The Pandan Flip” (RM38; pandan-infused dark rum, coconut, bitters, egg yolk) and “Lychee No. 3” (RM38; dry gin, lychee, ginger flower, lime).

These drinks are mostly concocted by a certain Angel Ng, a very femes bartender in the KL circuit. The menu itself is split into five eras; Vintage (1850s-1910s), Classic (1920s-1930s), Tiki (1940s-1960s), Disco (1970s-2000s) and Contemporary (late 2000s-present).

They do plan to switch their menus up every 3 months, so be sure to drop by every now and again to see what’s shaking (or stirred if you ain’t Bond).

2. Reggae Bar

A bar dedicated to the man, the myth, the legend; Bob Marley. The bar which is located just around the corner of Petaling Street night market caters to the younger crowd and backpackers who stay in the surrounding area.

The drinks here are rather reasonable as compared to the usual KL bars. The piña coladas (RM18; pineapple juice, white rum, coconut cream) are shockingly good, also you have to try the Burnin~ Get Up, Stand Up (1973) (RM18; gin, Pernod, pineapple juice, orange juice, lime juice, grenadine).

The food there is very tasty and known to be served quickly so if you get hungry around the area this is somewhere to stop by. Do try their Spicy Reggae pizza (RM20; tuna chunks, onions, red chili, homemade spicy sauce, mozzarella cheese).

But please make sure you’re not carrying any of the ‘devil’s lettuce’, you don’t need me to tell you that’ll be an expensive trip to the balai.

3. The Berlin KL

Taking heavy inspiration from the gritty German capital, this bar features a lot of pop art referencing the Nixon-era establishment as well as some wunder-ful German graffiti. Finding it may be a little tricky. Pro tip: look for the red door inside “Agosto Guest Door”.

Resident Mixologists are highly trained in selecting the finest spirits to concoct bespoke cocktails that will leave anyone feeling a little buzzed & perhaps even, in the mood for a dance!

The bar’s signature cocktail is The Lustgarten, named after one of Berlin’s most famous parks on Museum Island. The drink is mild and fruity, with a hint of sourness from freshly squeezed limes and topped off with fresh, edible flowers. Another popular drink is The Brandenburg (RM36; Jägermeister, triple sec, pineapple juice, lemon juice, passion fruit syrup).

Food here is rather limited, but they have glorious diner-styled hot dogs that’s a definite must-try (sorry JAKIM).

4. The Attic

For a speakeasy, though, this is rather easy to locate. You just have to head up The Travel Hub Guesthouse and once inside, locate the spiral staircase leading up to, well, The Attic.

The bar has two main areas, the inside with the bar and booths and an outdoor seating area with an amazing view of the gritty side of KL’s skyline. Do not hesitate to go for the bar seats as the bartenders would be more than happy to entertain you and your guests. Sometimes they even give you a drink on the house.

When it comes to drinks, Attic offers a wide range of classics as well as uniquely crafted cocktails (they even have a Game of Thrones menu!). One of their house special and absolute must-try is the Guinness Tarik (carefe) (RM35; dark rum, condensed milk, Guinness, nutmeg).

If you’re up for a drink that’s less heavy, get a Sloe Gin + Tonic (RM24), its very refreshing and the fruity gin doesn’t have that harsh of a kick.

5. Nosh, Tipple & Brew

Located a little off Petaling Street centre, Nosh Tipple and Brew is about 15mins away by foot. It is a very classy joint with with a dash of oriental vibe to it, thanks to its beautiful Chinese umbrellas.

The place serves amazing food, such as the Braised Lamb Shank (RM52; served with mashed potatoes and aromatic veggies) and have some fantastic brunch options as well. But do control your alcohol if you’re going there in the daytime as they offer some pretty sweet happy hour deals.

It’s casual dining at it’s finest with a darn good bar to boot. To start your meal off, you could go for a Martini Extra Dry (RM20; gin, little to no dry vermouth) and grab a glass of Glenfiddich 12 Year (RM26) to enjoy after the meal.
