IT’S OVER, NAJIB IS FINISHED! SAME FOR ANWAR: OVERWHELMING NUMBER OF M’SIANS LED BY MALAY READERS SAY THEY TRUST MAHATHIR AS LEADER

An overwhelming number of Malaysiakini’s English-language and Bahasa Malaysia readers have expressed their trust in former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

However, the same cannot be said for the news portal’s Chinese-language readers who expressed some reservations.

In a Malaysiakini poll titled “Do you trust Mahathir”, 75 percent of 11,200 respondents who took part in the Malay-language version of the poll expressed their trust in Mahathir upholding Pakatan Harapan’s agenda of reform, if it wins federal power while 69 percent of 8,300 English-language readers who voted, answered in the affirmative.

Chinese-language readers’ lack of trust in Mahathir was evident when only 63 percent voted yes for the same question.

Meanwhile, 69 percent of English-language respondents and 74 percent of Bahasa Malaysia readers polled responded with “yes” when asked whether the opposition should be led by Mahathir.

Conversely, only 58 percent of the 2,200 Chinese-language readers who voted, responded with “yes” for the same question.

Interestingly, only 64 percent Chinese-language readers think that trustworthiness should be a factor for the opposition to work with Mahathir.

Most English and Bahasa Malaysia readers are of the opinion that trustworthiness is an important factor with 79 percent of English-language readers and 81 percent of Bahasa Malaysia readers voting “yes’.

However, the English-language and Chinese-language readers lent somewhat similar responses, when asked for their opinion on whether Mahathir will return to Umno if he is successful in removing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak with Harapan’s help.

Sixty-one percent of the respondents of the English-language version of the poll and 60 percent of Chinese-language readers responded with “no”. On the other hand, 65 percent of Bahasa Malaysia readers voted “no” to the question.

Polled over seven days

Malaysiakini’s latest poll ran for seven days since July 20.

Last week, Harapan leaders expressed their trust in Mahathir, with PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail telling Malaysiakini that Mahathir has long crossed the “red line” when it comes to Umno.

Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, on the other hand, pointed to Mahathir’s consistency since day one of the Citizens’ Declaration initiative of his battle against Najib.

Pundits, too, believe there is no chance of Mahathir returning to Umno as long as Najib is prime minister.

Although there is that possibility of Mahathir betraying Harapan if Umno were to reject Najib, political analyst Khoo Kay Peng pointed out that the tables would turn, if Harapan were to win in the general election.

Umno members will instead flock to Mahathir’s party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.
