Prasarana believes ex-IGP Khalid will enhance public transport safety

Former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar, who retired on Sept 5, clocked in at his new job as the Prasarana Malaysia Bhd chairperson today.

Clad in his new white Prasarana uniform, Khalid appeared at the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between  state rail operator and SMRT Corporation Ltd from Singapore on a new rail project – the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS).

While the social media-savvy former top cop did not say a word to the media, Prasarana president and group CEO Azmi Abdul Aziz "officially introduced" him at the event.

Azmi touched briefly on how Khalid, who had 40 over years of experience with the police force, is needed in the public transport sector.

"We are grateful to have Tan Sri (Khalid) as our chairman, because being the ex-IGP of the country, he brings with him, the wealth of experience in public order, safety, and also security (in public transport).

"We are in the business of carrying and transporting the public, and to give confidence that (their safety) would be taken care of," Azmi said.

"With the guidance of an expert in safety and security, we are very confident that we can ensure public order, safety and security will be improved," he added.

Khalid's appointment to Prasarana was widely criticised, due to his lack of experience in the public transport sector.

Prasarana operates public transport infrastructure that includes the Mass Rail Transit (MRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT), KL Monorail and Rapid bus services in the federal capital, Penang, Kuantan and Kamunting.

It is fully owned by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, an entity parked under the Prime Minister's Department.- Mkini
