PKR deputy president Azmin Ali says he has been vindicated, following Anwar Ibrahim’s admission that he endorsed ties between PKR and PAS almost two years ago.

“I am vindicated. Truth prevails over falsehood. Seeking a solution requires earnest effort – not grandstanding,” Azmin wrote on Facebook today.

Azmin is viewed as the main proponent for PKR’s continued negotiations with PAS, a position that has caused rifts within the party.

In his statement this morning, Anwar said that when PAS decided not to join Pakatan Harapan, he had advised PKR that it “need not necessarily sever ties with PAS if PAS is still willing to continue talks”.

He said he had consistently expressed this stand to other Harapan parties, but that “leaders had a right to review this (stand) from time to time”.

He also noted Azmin, who he said was tasked by the party with spearheading the talks, knew the negotiations were part of a “national strategy not limited to Selangor alone”.

Anwar’s statement came in the wake of an internal dispute within PKR, which had led to its Kelantan members mutinying against state leaders deemed too friendly to PAS.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli further brought the issue into the limelight by calling for a special congress to conclusively resolve the issue of whether or not to continue talks with PAS.

The Pakatan Harapan coalition subsequently stated that there would be no cooperation with PAS, while the PKR political bureau reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the coalition.
