GE14: Win or lose, can we be honourable about it?

As the nation remains pregnant with hope to be done with the 14th general election (GE14), the amount of crass, worrisome, abrasive stunts being spewed by politicians and national leaders is indeed most worrisome.
Do we have to march into the election campaign period with an unending trail of abrasive insults, trading barbs and screaming all kinds of abrasive language, including using crude words like “bangsat” (bastard)?
Do we have to peddle all kinds of fear-mongering, like threats and fears of any one race or religion being annihilated if another political party gains the votes?
Must we march into the general election with race or religion as the clarion call and topmost priority of the political party? Or do we champion a united nation of multiracial Malaysia that alone can guarantee a respected future for all citizens?
It is about time that our litany of politicians and national leaders stopped peddling fear. Instead, they must champion hope. They must sow the seeds of a united nation of people.
It is time that the voters send home a loud and defining message to all politicians across all divides that candidates representing any party that has been riding high with fear-mongering and throwing insults at their opponents will be annihilated without mercy by the voters.
Politicians need to demonstrate how graceful they are and how far they will go to maintain honour and dignity, win or lose the election.
Hence, please stop all these race-based and religious sentiments of anger and rage drummed up by claims of being under attack by ‘enemies’. In a general election, there are no enemies, only competitors.
We cannot go on and on in the name of politics and keep claiming or harping that any one party other than BN is an enemy that will destroy Malaysia.
Hopefully, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will help put some order, trust and hope for the country before he dissolves Parliament and calls for GE14.
Hopefully too, all politicians from all sides of the divide will march into election mode with their own selling points of peace, progress and prosperity for Malaysians and not keep tearing at each other.
If Malaysia is to cross the finishing line in becoming a developed nation, we must get out of gutter politics and be a nation-builder competing on healthy parameters.
Politics is never dirty. It is the people (politicians) who are ultimately dirty. Let us get rid of dirty politicians so that the nation can thrive on clean politics.
And hopefully, the media will blank out politicians who keep peddling dirty politics and in place give importance to citizens writing in to express honourable, trustworthy and uniting hopes.- Mkini
