BN’s Yusoff Noor made Penang opposition leader
Penang assembly also nominates first Punjabi deputy speaker from PKR, Dr Amar Pritpal Abdullah.
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang assembly’s minority three-member opposition bench has selected Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Sungai Dua assemblyman Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor as the opposition leader.
In a press conference outside the assembly, the three-term rep vowed to protect Penang from excess development and to hold the supermajority Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition accountable.
The 40-member assembly comprises 37 PH members, with two BN members and one from PAS.
Yusoff said he would also accept the role of state Public Accounts Committee chief as offered and promised in the PH manifesto.
“Although there are only three of us, I am sure there are conscientious backbenchers who would stand their ground.
“Rest assured, we will raise matters related to the transport master plan, housing, excessive development, the environment and floods in the assembly. We will not let them get away,” Yusoff said.
He said the other opposition members – Nor Hafizah Othman (BN-Permatang Berangan) and Yusni Mat Piah (PAS-Penaga) – would ensure that the position of Malays and Islam is protected.
Yusoff also praised PH’s decision to retain Speaker Law Choo Kiang for another term, saying he was the best man for the job as he had proven to be impartial, stern and willing to allow all sides to speak.
Earlier, 40 state assembly members were sworn in before Law, with Dr Amar Pritpal Abdullah (PKR-Sungai Bakap) selected as deputy speaker. - FMT
