Prosecution withdraws appeal against Zaid over post on Najib
The prosecution has withdrawn the appeal against former minister Zaid Ibrahim's acquittal earlier this year over a charge under Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for making an offensive posting on former premier Najib Abdul Razak.
DPP Jamil Aripin informed the High Court in Kuala Lumpur of the withdrawal today.
Initially, Justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali (above) wanted to fix a mention date but Zaid's lawyer M Puravalen highlighted that his client had been acquitted of the charge.
"The Attorney-General's Chambers has accepted a representation letter from the lawyer of the accused and decided to withdraw its appeal," Jamil told the court.
Following this, the judge recorded the withdrawal and dismissed the prosecution's appeal.
Early this year, the former minister was acquitted without his defence being called by the sessions court for making a blog posting claiming that Najib was a danger to the country.
Sessions judge Zaman Mohd Noor had ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case because it failed to call Najib to testify in court.
Outside the courtroom today, Zaid told reporters if politicians cannot stand being criticised they should not enter politics.
He also expressed concern that sessions judge who acquited him in January had been transferred.
"I want the present government to look into whether the transfer of the judge by the previous government was due to his decision in my case or otherwise."
Zaman was believed to be transferred to Kota Bharu. - Mkini
