'Dewan Negara will pass bill to repeal Anti-Fake News Act'
Malaysian Senators Council president Khairudin Abd Samad believes the Dewan Negara will pass the repeal of the Anti-Fake News Act (AFN Act), two weeks from now.
"I think the bill to repeal the law will be passed because the number of BN senators is reducing," he told Malaysiakini.
Despite many seeing the BN as still dominating the Dewan Negara, Khairudin noted that some of the BN senators were the representatives of NGOs, while some of them came from the parties that have quit the opposition coalition.
"The tenures of the senators are varied and we will lose a few more senators by the end of this year. On the other hand, the number of Harapan senators is increasing," he said.
It is not going to serve any purpose for them to go against the will of the rakyat, who want the AFN Act repealed, he said.
As such, Khairudin advised the BN senators to vote according to their will, instead of voting along the party line.
'Up to each of them to decide'
"I told them that it is up to each of them to decide, that I am not going to control them because they are big enough to make their own decision," the Umno senator added.
Asked if his party has issued any instruction on the bill, Khairudin said he doesn't take instructions from anyone.
The Dewan Negara has passed the bills presented to it on the repeal of the goods and services tax (GST) law and the revival of the sales and service tax (SST) law after the BN senators decided to give way.
The BN senators are seen as softening toward Harapan as compared with their colleagues in the Dewan Rakyat, who had objected to the SST.
Khairudin also denied that the BN senators have defected to the other side.
"There is no such thing! We are not going to defect. But it is up to the members to decide whether they want to remain with the party.
"But so far, I didn't hear anything," he said, adding that the BN senators would approve any bill that is drafted for the sake of the people but reject politically-motivated bills.
The debate on AFN Act (Repeal) Bill 2018 in the Dewan Negara started on Monday and was then postponed to Sept 12, to give way for the House to debate on the Royal Address. - Mkini
