WANTED – HARAPAN MINISTERS WITH A BACKBONE & WHO DON’T SAY STUPID THINGS: PRE-GE14, THEY THRILLED VOTERS WITH THEIR INTELLIGENCE BECAUSE THEY DID THEIR OWN HOMEWORK, NOW THEY RELY ON BN-TRAINED STAFF – NO WONDER SO MANY START TO SOUND EXACTLY LIKE AHMAD MASLAN

AT a dinner in Kuala Lumpur recently, a minister was giving a speech, peppered with numbers and statistics, which went on for about 10 minutes.
After he was done, he put aside the piece of paper and announced “That was the speech prepared for me. Now I am going to give my own”.
The crowd cheered, perhaps because such a direct and raw approach was something they have been waiting to see.
The yang berhormat then proceeded to admit some problems his ministry faced, its limitations, but promised to look into each problem as best he could.
That really is all the average Malaysian expects of our new government.
A government which will look, not at the interests of a select few, but the rakyat as a whole.
Malaysians voted in a new government for more than just a protest against GST or RM2.6 billion in donations.
While those were visible and affects a large proportion of Malaysians, the reality is, for many this was just a tipping point for a litany of other issues – urban poverty, racial issues, religious issues, decline in civil service, education, global competitiveness, corruption, moral policing, lack of economic and job opportunities and so on.
It was a culmination of these and many issues, affecting multiple stakeholders to varying degrees.
Regardless who they voted for, the new government is in now, and expectations are high that it will arrest the decline and reverse the rot.
But for that to happen, perhaps the members of government should first agree with each other on key issues.
The way things appear to be now, there seems to be a steady pattern of issuing and retracting statements – from education to foreign land ownership, LGBT, taxes and more.
Apart from a handful of ministers and deputies who seem to have taken to their roles fairly well, the majority of new ones appear to be still looking for solid footing.
While the people are more forgiving towards bumbling mistakes for the first 100 days, it would be less easy to look the other way moving forward.
It is also increasingly likely that much of the “stupid” statements issued by the previous administration’s members may not be their fault after all, but the poor quality of work by top ministry officials entrusted to undertake research and prepare reports for the ministers.
A perfect example would be the “decimal point” mistake about GST refunds and more recently, the poorly thought out reply to the question in Parliament regarding the number of stateless Indians.
If the members of the present administration wish to continue to be perceived as more capable and intelligent than the previous administration, they would do well to reprimand this inaptitude or replace the people in question.
Doing their own research or investing in good help in that area goes a long way at improving public perception, as demonstrated by one YB, Ahmad Maslan.
A lot of reform needs to be done to bring our country back on track – some of them popular, others less so. But all of them necessary, and the implied promise of this delivery was at the heart of Pakatan Harapan’s campaign.
Tax reform is necessary, regardless if it is SST, soda tax, sugar tax or other forms, to offset the deficit created from removing GST.
So are other long-outstanding issues – healthcare reform, public housing, public transport, education, civil liberties and so on.
All along the way, the PH ministers will be dogged by inexperience, public backlashes both real and manufactured, interference and eventually, an organised and rejuvenated opposition.
Courage and steadfastness, along with no small amount of spine, will be needed as they put their backs into it.
Time to fold the prepared text and look into each problem as best they can.
