Media Prima staff evacuated over bomb scare

An evacuation order was issued at the Sri Pentas building in Bandar Utama tonight following a bomb threat.
However, a subsequent two-hour search failed to turn up any suspicious devices, and staff were allowed back into the building.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Petaling Jaya OCPD Mohd Zani Che Din said police had received an emergency call at 10.12pm where a man claimed to have given instructions to his followers to place a bomb in the building.
“Our first move was to evacuate the building, and after that we conducted a sweep of the area with bomb disposal units from the Selangor police headquarters and Petaling Jaya police headquarters,” he said.
The operation was completed at about 1.20am.
Eyewitnesses told Malaysiakini that police issued the order at around 10.30pm, which was followed by some 200 Media Prima staff evacuating the building, which houses Media Prima Bhd’s broadcasting facilities.
This includes TV3NTV7Fly FM, and several other TV and radio broadcasters.
A ticker visible on TV3 said that late-night news programme Nightline was cancelled "due to unavoidable circumstances."
Malaysiakini also understands that a bomb squad arrived on the scene at around 11.40pm to analyse the threat.
It is understood that a fire truck with six firefighters, police officers and a K9 unit, civil defence personnel as well as an ambulance were also placed on standby outside the Sri Pentas building for any eventualities.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Mohd Rizal Buang said a call from the police was received at 11.19pm.
According to Zani (photo), the incident will be investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
The provision calls for up to seven years' imprisonment upon conviction for threats of death or grievous hurt, or threats of destruction of any property by fire, or threats of any offence that would lead to punishment by death or imprisonment.
An offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code is also punishable with an additional prison term of up to two years if the threat is made through anonymous communication. -Mkini
