Liow satisfied with reception during Balakong campaign
BALAKONG POLLS | MCA president Liow Tiong Lai made his maiden appearance on the Balakong by-election campaign trail yesterday and expressed satisfaction with the reception he received from locals.
Together with the MCA candidate Tan Chee Teong, Senator Ti Lian Ker and other MCA campaigners, Liow made his rounds in Sungai Chua on the back of a pickup truck, urging voters, in Hakka, to “Give opposition a chance! Give Tan Chee Teong a chance!”
They also promoted MCA’s election pledge to act as a check-and-balance against the rule of Pakatan Harapan.
Although Liow is no longer a minister, the sight of him waving from the back of the truck drew many onlookers who appeared to recognise him instantly.
Some pointed at him and shouted, “It’s Liow Tiong Lai!”, while others gave him the thumbs-up.
Liow spent about an hour canvassing for votes for his party candidate, most of the time from the back of the truck. Occasionally, he disembarked from the vehicle to meet voters at their homes and accompanied Tan in distributing campaign leaflets.
After visiting the Sungai Chua New Village, Liow and his entourage went to a nearby coffee shop to shake hands with voters and ask them about their lives.
He was greeted with friendly nods and smiles.
In general, throughout Liow’s campaigning, local residents did not surround him but nevertheless smiled at him and accepted the leaflets Liow distributed.
When speaking to reporters later, Liow was asked to explain why he only started campaigning for Tan after 11 days into the campaign period.
He replied: “We were here even before nomination day. On Aug 11, I was the first to bring the MCA candidate to meet the locals. I also started the setting up of the by-election operations centre.”
After that, Liow said, he had to be overseas on prior work engagements and just returned on Monday. His absence has not affected MCA’s campaigning, he added, because it has assembled a good team.
As for the reception he received on his rounds, he expressed satisfaction and said: “On my walkabout today, I visited some coffee shops and met many local voters. They understand MCA needs the support of the people; the support of the Chinese.
“I know MCA has a lot of weaknesses, and we have made a lot of mistakes. We admit our past mistakes and I hope the Balakong voters will give us a chance.”
The Sept 8 by-election was called following the death of the incumbent, Eddie Ng, in a car accident. It will see a straight fight between MCA’s Tan and DAP’s Wong Siew Ki.
In the last general election, Balakong voted overwhelmingly for Harapan, and gave Ng, who was from DAP, a 35,538-vote majority victory in a three-cornered fight. - Mkini
