‘ENERGY SAVER’ YEO BEE YIN SETS NEW RECORD IN PARLIAMENT, WITH FASTEST-EVER RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS FROM FELLOW MPs

KUALA LUMPUR: Yeo Bee Yin set a record in Parliament for the fastest ministerial replies.
The Minister of Energy, Green Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment took nine minutes to reply to questions raised by Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) and Steven Choong Shiau Yoon (PH-Tebrau) on electricity tariffs imposed on schools.
This was after Yeo said she would provide written answers to questions raised by lawmakers who were absent to hear her replies in Parliament.
“The minister knows how to save energy as time is gold.
“She has set a record for taking only nine minutes for her ministerial replies,” Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming quipped, after Yeo informed him that she had concluded her replies in Parliament today (Nov 21).
Earlier, Yeo told lawmakers that 54 schools under the ministry’s energy saving programme had managed to reduce a total of RM390,000 in electricity bills.
She said the programme would be expanded to more schools in the near future.
Dr Wee had suggested that government-assisted schools (Chinese, Tamil and missionary schools) pay similar electricity tariffs to that of government buildings, and Yeo replied that she would look into the matter.
Dr Wee had pointed out that the electricity tariffs for such schools were similar to that imposed on commercial buildings, which is much higher compared to tariffs for government buildings.
Choong had asked Yeo for a written reply on how much it would cost if electricity was fully subsidised by the Government.
Parliament had set aside Nov 19 and Nov 21 for 25 ministries to answer questions raised by lawmakers during debates on Budget 2019 (which was tabled on Nov 2).
Ministers are allotted 30 minutes to verbally reply to questions raised by lawmakers. Ministers are also allowed to provide written replies to MPs who are absent.
