NAJIB Razak today admitted making a phone call to jailed leader Anwar Ibrahim on the night of the May 9 general election but refused to divulge the nature of their conversation.

He said he had made a number of phone calls to Anwar.

“Yes, I did call him on the night of GE14. Even before this as well, I had called him. Just personal calls, to inquire about his heath and so on,”   he said in an interview with Sinar Harian today.

The former prime minister also denied that Barisan Nasional refused to concede defeat after the general election and was planning to retain power through other means.

“I deny that we had planned to ‘steal’ the victory from Pakatan Harapan or attempted to buy their MPs.

“There was also no meeting to declare an emergency, as had been rumoured,” he said.

Previously, Anwar had said that a shattered Najib had called him twice on election night for advice on what to do.

Anwar had said that he had advised Najib to concede defeat, but claimed the Pekan MP had initially refused to do so.

In an interview with the Mekong Review recently, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that Najib sought to “buy” Pakatan Harapan leaders after the May 9 election, which led to the delay in PH forming the new government.
