Trickle-down greed in Malaysia must be curbed

The latest news about the Petaling Jaya City Council's crackdown on illegal conquest of public parking lots by business operators is a classic affirmation of how greedy Malaysians, especially the business community is turning out to be.

Business operators are taking over public parking lots by defacing the yellow boxes with black paint to mislead road users into thinking that there is no gazetted public parking bay.

Business operators who are renting lots outside their premises (parking lots with red boxed markings) are hogging these lots well past the 6.30pm deadline for reserved private use.

And their abuse of the laws knows no limits. They even put up all kinds of immovable barricades to make sure the rented lot is permanently theirs to hog and secure.

This latest exposé, which road users have noted for a long time, is just one example of how ruthless, selfish and greedy business operators are turning out to be.

If they can be so selfish and disregard laws, wonder how far they will go to ensure they make profits at the expense of the public.

What is happening to the Malaysian mindset and attitude?

When the world around us is fast-tracking the pursuit of a happiness index for its citizens and championing positive value systems in governance and businesses on a voluntary basis, here in Malaysia the apparent driving force is "how much I can take for myself."

We cannot downplay the falling values, neither can we continue to dismiss this attitudinal liability, for if we do so it is the start of an unstoppable fall in nationhood.

For as long as citizens steal from each other a nation remains weakened and is doomed in the long haul.

Malaysia's national greed aggregate must be tackled. The media must keep exposing all forms of greed and abuse by the business communities and not only target politicians. - Mkini
