PM did us a favour by not attending - Suhakam

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's decision not to attend Suhakam's celebration of the International Human Rights Day today actually helped the event, said the commission chairperson Razali Ismail.

"The prime minister has, in his own way, done us a favour.

"Because he is not here, people suddenly got more interested, so they have come (to the event)," Razali said at a press conference after the event held at Padang Timur, Petaling Jaya, today.

Mahathir yesterday said he was not going to attend the Suhakam event today as they differ over the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).

However, Razali said Mahathir is a "master strategist" and everything he said must be viewed on a larger scale.
