Shafee: I don't want Sri Ram prosecuting me

Senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah has applied to remove former Federal Court judge Gopal Sri Ram from leading the prosecution in regard to his charge of receiving the RM9.5 million from former premier Najib Abdul Razak.

The matter came up for case management today before High Court deputy registrar Farah Azura Mohd Saad, who fixed Jan 22 for the prosecution to reply to Shafee's application.

She also fixed Jan 24 for the case to be mentioned before Justice Colin Lawrence Sequerah.

Shafee was represented by lawyer Sarah Abishegam while DPP Mohd Izzat Fauzan appeared for the prosecution.

It is not known the reasons why Shafee is seeking to remove Sri Ram but the former judge had appeared for former opposition leader and current PKR president Anwar Ibrahim in trying to set aside his second sodomy conviction following discovery in regard to the allegation that Najib paid the RM9.5 million to Shafee.

Shafee is charged with two counts of money laundering and two counts of making false statements or declarations, on all of which he claimed trial.

He is alleged to have engaged in two counts of money laundering activities by receiving proceeds from illegal activities amounting to RM9.5 million.

The sum was allegedly transferred to Shafee in two tranches from a bank account belonging to Najib on Sept 13, 2013, and Feb 17, 2014.

If found guilty under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amlapau), Shafee could face a maximum jail term of five years, a fine of up to RM5 million or both.

Shafee also faces two counts of violating the Income Tax Act 1967 by omitting to declare the income received from Najib in statements made to the Inland Revenue Board on two occasions in 2015. - Mkini
