GEORGE TOWN: The tropical cyclone, Pabuk, is now lashing Thailand and Vietnam, with Malaysia largely spared except for its northern region which is expected to be hit by its tailwinds.
Heavy rain is expected to occur over Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak, whereas heavy rain is expected to continue over Kelantan and Terengganu until Jan 4.
Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) released an infographic stating that the Pabuk tropical cyclone was expected to land Thursday (Jan 3) and last until Friday (Jan 4).
Strong winds and rough seas are expected over waters off Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.
Penang Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said tropical storms had been building up over the past week.
"We are now on orange alert as the storm hits the East Coast this morning and is expected to hit the Northern West Coast.
"We have alerted all agencies and are prepared to face what may come by," he said.
Phee urged the public to call MetMalaysia hotline at 1300-22-1638 in case of emergencies or if any help was required.
The rapidly rotating storm system may cause strong winds, rough seas, continuous rainfall, floods and landslides.- Star
