British Man Who Allegedly Beat Thai Wife to Death ‘Mysteriously’ Dies in Prison

A British man who was suspected of beating his Thai wife to death has reportedly died inside a prison in Thailand due to injuries from unknown circumstances.

Originally from Nottingham, 51-year-old Kevin Smitham was imprisoned following accusations that he kicked and strangled his wife, 29-year-old Kandra Smitham on April 15 last year after she refused to have sex with him. Neighbors discovered her body under a blanket the next day.

Police investigations revealed that Smitham had attacked her, covered her body and then went to bed.

“I arrived and found a woman lying naked in front of the house and called officials from the rescue foundation,” Inspector General Watcharapol Pimwong was quoted as saying.

“The victim had a blanket covering her. There were many bruises on the face and body. She had been dead for several hours. The victim’s husband confessed to killing his wife. He said that he did not mean to kill her.”

Smitham was then arrested and detained at the Ubon Ratchathani Central Prison to await his trial for “involuntary manslaughter,” BBC reports. 

In August, Smitham was found with fatal injuries on the perimeter of the prison and died later in a hospital, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has confirmed this week. It is currently unknown how he ended up with these injuries.

“Our staff is providing support and advice to the family of a British man who died in Thailand in August 2018, and they remain in touch with the local authorities,” an FCO spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Before their deaths, the couple was raising two young children together in their beach home in the resort of Pattaya, where Kandra was a well-known fitness enthusiast with over 28,000 followers on Facebook.
