Harapan: Outgoing CM can't lead caretaker Malacca govt, will refer to court
Malacca Pakatan Harapan wants to refer the appointment of Sulaiman Md Ali as caretaker chief minister to court.
In a statement, the opposition bloc claimed that Sulaiman (above) has lost the confidence of the majority in the Malacca state assembly and thus is not fit to lead the caretaker government.
This comes after Malacca state assembly speaker Rauf Yusoh earlier today announced the dissolution of the assembly, and that its outgoing chief minister Sulaiman is to continue leading the state in the capacity of a caretaker government.
"Malacca Pakatan Harapan is of the view that it is inappropriate to allow him (Sulaiman) to be the chief minister for the caretaker government.
"This is in line with a precedent case on March 2, 2020 where the duty to manage the state was given to the state secretary until a new chief minister was appointed.
"Malacca Pakatan Harapan will refer to the court on whether the caretaker state government as announced by the state assembly speaker earlier today has any legitimacy," said state Harapan chairperson Adly Zahari in the statement.
Adly is also a former Malacca chief minister, who was replaced by Sulaiman in March last year after his Harapan state government lost the support of the majority in the state assembly.
Earlier today, Rauf held a press conference saying that Sulaiman has advised Malacca state governor Ali Rustam to dissolve the state assembly.
The advice was made after four state lawmakers led by Sungai Udang assemblyperson Idris Haron withdrew support from the BN-Perikatan Nasional government.
The other three were Nor Azman Hassan (Umno-Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Bersatu-Telok Mas) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent-Pengkalan Batu). - Mkini
