Safety and Health Dept probing Top Glove worker's death

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) is investigating the death of a Nepali worker from rubber glove manufacturer Top Glove.

“We have begun investigations and a media statement will be issued as soon as preliminary investigations have been carried out,” Selangor Dosh director Dr Khairul Baharin Mohd Baharuddin said when contacted by Malaysiakini.

He also said Top Glove has not reported three alleged worker deaths to the department, including the Nepali worker's death on Sunday (Oct 3).

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the deceased worker — who worked at one of Top Glove’s factories in Klang, Selangor — allegedly died during his shift, as claimed by migrant workers rights specialist Andy Hall.

This is the third death to occur within the span of three months. The previous two were on Aug 25 and Sept 8.

It is understood the Nepali worker was on duty at a site identified as “F19 compounding area”.

A 20-second video, believed to be taken at the scene, showed a man wearing an unbuttoned blue and yellow uniform shirt and jeans, lying on his back, on top of what appeared to be part of a large machine.

The death of Taman Puspa was confirmed by Top Glove in a statement to Malaysiakini.

Klang Utara District police chief Vijaya Rao Samachulu said a police report had been made on the incident.

The previously alleged deaths of Top Glove migrant workers were said to be of a Bangladeshi and a Nepali national, who were assigned to the "F22 robotic area" at another factory outlet which is also in Klang.

Previously, North-South Alliance executive director Adrian Pereira told Malaysiakini that workplaces must legally report deaths or serious accidents to Dosh. - Mkini
