A truce, Ramasamy? Let MIC serve Indians

Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P Ramasamy has in a more sobre tone rationalised his recent outburst against MIC Youth leader Sivaraajh Chandran. Nevertheless it is unclear whether this equates to a conciliatory truce in the ongoing spat between Ramasamy and Sivaraajh as the DAP leader’s primary political preoccupation is to discredit MIC.

Ramasamy suffers from acute MIC phobia. MIC is the party he loves to hate. MIC, which he deems doomed and dead, is in his DNA and this is distressing him.

On the objective side, while he has never failed in launching regular vitriolic attacks in the media about MIC, we are yet to read of his plans for his constituents or the Penang Indian community.

Sadly, the Penang Indian community has yet to see or feel the senior DAP leader’s hand in any progressive community empowerment initiative in the state.

One wonders, if after 8 years as the second most powerful leader in the economically most strategic state, Ramasamy has wasted a window of opportunity to showcase the benefits to the Indian community for backing an alternative government.

The fact on the ground in Penang reveals that he has no clue as to the issues plaguing his own constituents in Penang.

He has unfortunately immersed his mind in a negative political process of spinning hatred towards MIC with a strong belief to harvest dividends in the next general election.

But, this thought process is an exercise in futility. He has failed to appreciate that it may have been possible prior to April 2008, when he was part of the Opposition with only promises to deliver. Now he is the key member of the ruling government in the state, the performance of which is under scrutiny.

Ramasamy’s failure to transcend from the comfort of Opposition politics of criticism to the demands and accountability of a ruling government is going to boomerang in his face in the next general election for sure.

Penang-born Indian youngsters are marginalised out of affordable home ownership in the island. Instead of resolving real issues, Ramasamy uses his coveted political office to manufacture crisis like the Thaipusam chariot issue.

MIC suggests he goes to the ground to resolve community problems; we shall not be an obstacle towards that. On the same note, he should leave us alone to do our service to the Indian community. If this truce is possible, the community would be the beneficiary.

But I bet, knowing Ramasamy’s mindset, he will not refrain from MIC bashing. There is nothing else he is capable of.

The fact remains, even before Ramasamy got his first set of milk teeth, MIC was on the ground serving the community. Ours is a historical commitment, not a freak political flash which catapulted Ramasamy to where he is today.

Further, we wish him longevity and great health to be around for many, many years, but let me assure him that our party’s service to the community will outlive him.

Ramasamy should accept the bitter truth that MIC is not anywhere near its deathbed as he constantly proclaims.
