Hatyai shooting victim laid to rest in Sg Pinang
BALIK PULAU: The body of Mohd Nizam Ahmad Basrah, 28, who was shot dead in Phadungpakdee Road, Hatyai, Thailand on May 16, was laid to rest at the Sungai Pinang Muslim cemetery in Balik Pulau at 1.45am today.
Nizam’s father, Ahmad Basrah Awang, 49, and his family had gone to Hatyai on Tuesday afternoon to bring back his remains from a local hospital with the help of Kampung Sungai Pinang and Kampung Baru village security and development committee (JKKK) via the Bukit Kayu Hitam border entry.
“I am thankful that the Thai government and authorities had given us full cooperation to bring my son’s body. For those who had helped and supported us along the way, thank you so much,” he said while holding back his tears.
The last time Basrah had seen his son was in April when he came home to visit his grandmother.
“I was close to him, but now I have to accept everything that had happened with an open heart,” he said.
Nizam has four other step siblings and was very close to his grandmother since he had stayed with her after his father re-married.
Saadiah Abu, 80, who had raised Nizam since he was two months old after his mother died, said she had lost the jewel of her life.
“There’s no word to describe how lonely I feel right now as it has always been me and him since the beginning. He had never left me alone and now he is gone, I feel so lost,” she said with teary eyes.
Nizam had told his grandmother that he was working in Singapore since early this year with a high-profile Malaysian who was a ‘Datuk’, but none of his family members were aware that he had gone to Hatyai for any specific purpose.
Teluk Bahang assemblyman Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah, who visited the victim’s house, thanked the villagers and the Malaysian consulate in Thailand who had helped speed up the process of releasing the body.
Hatyai police found the body of Nizam after he was gunned down while riding a motorcycle to his hotel. Police are now identifying the motorcycle owner and going through the CCTV camera footage obtained from a nearby premises to identify the assailant.
