SIBU: The direct Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Pelawan, Datuk Janet Lau has called on the people to make the constituency a leading example of solidarity, in line with the election trend that shows indication of more Chinese voters returning to the BN fold.

Speaking at a ‘ceramah’ (speech rally) in Delta Estate on Sunday, she said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem had wished for the Chinese to join the other communities to form the Sarawak government.

She pointed out that Adenan had said BN could rule Sarawak without the Chinese, but he wanted to include the community towards the goal of a ‘perfect Sarawak’ — one where people of all races could live together in unity and harmony.

“We aspire for Pelawan to be the leading example when it comes to Sarawak harmony because it is the biggest constituency with a dense Chinese population — at 97 per cent. There are over 32,000 voters among us. Let’s rally behind Datuk Patinggi Adenan.”

Janet said she was up for the challenge because she wanted the people to be a part of TeamAdenan.

“Pelawan is prosperous. It is rare we have such a good leader with such friendly policies. I am with TeamAdenan”

She said if the people could give five years to David Wong of DAP but had seen nothing productive, then they should give Adenan another five years as well.

“In just five years, you would see a total transformation of Pelawan, as well as the whole of Sarawak.”

Janet said Pelawan used to be a ‘black area’ for BN.

“Let us come together, make it grey, and then, make it white. This is a motivational force. I want the people to work with me towards this aspiration.”

Janet said she had been in Pelawan serving beside her husband for three decades, back when the late Datuk Robert Lau was Sibu MP.

“I was a mother raising three children; I was the wife of a politician serving beside him. May 7 is the eve of Mother’s Day. Vote me. I shall embrace Pelawan with a motherly love.”

She said Adenan took the helm of the state government two years ago, and he had implemented 53 policies and projects that were people-friendly.

Earlier in her speech, speaker Jaime Tieu said 53 per cent of voters in Pelawan were women. As such, she called on the constituents to vote for Janet, as she was the only BN woman candidate here.

On unfriendly comments about Janet’s candidacy — one that touched about her age, Tieu remarked: “Lim Kit Siang (DAP veteran) is older. Why not kick him out? Janet has worked in Pelawan for 30 years. She knows the needs of the people of Pelawan.”
