KUCHING: Peninsular-based opposition parties are either confused or trying to confuse Sarawakians by playing with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) issue for the coming state election.

In giving this reminder, PBB senior vice president Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the state election is to elect members of the State Legislative Assembly and not the Parliament.

Speaking to reporters at Kampung Sri Arjuna, 10th Mile here on Sunday, he advised Sarawakians not to be fooled by the opposition’s propaganda by playing up the GST issue.

“GST is a federal matter and implemented by the federal government, not by the state. If the opposition wins in the coming state election they still can’t do anything about it,” he added.

Meanwhile, he commented that he was baffled at why DAP chose to field a candidate in the new seat of Stakan as it was against the creation of the constituency.

“Before this, DAP was very vocal in the creation of Stakan and other new seats. Now they want to put a candidate to contest in the area which to me is baffling,” he said.

The battle for Stakan is a straight fight between BN candidate Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mahmud and DAP’s Leslie Ting.

At the same time, Awang Tengah claimed that the opposition did not know the culture of Sarawakians and would never ever know about Sarawak and its people.

“Only local parties know how to address local issues which is why Sarawakians still vote for BN. Sarawakians do not need the opposition with their Peninsular Malaysia culture to come into the state,” he remarked.

Also present during the event were Mohd Ali and local community leaders.
