Law professor probed under assembly law over 2014 UIA gathering
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — Law professor Dr Abdul Aziz Bari and at least two other activists are being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012 over a rally that took place outside the gates of the International Islamic University (UIA) in 2014.
“We are investigating the organisers under PAA,” Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Ali Ahmad told Malay Mail Online.
The police today recorded a statement from Abdul Aziz, who is a lecturer at Universiti Selangor (Unisel), at the Gombak district police headquarters for his role in the rally.
On November 8, 2014, UIA closed off its entrance gates and turned off its lights to prevent an academic freedom talk from taking place inside the campus.
Abdul Aziz and other speakers, activists Safwan Anang and Fahmi Zainol, were barred from entering the campus, forcing the students to organise the talk outside campus gates.
Though the investigation paper was opened in 2014, the case did not move forward due to a judicial review on the PAA.
However, last year the Court of Appeal overturned its earlier decision that the advance notice provision of PAA was unconstitutional.
“The police have said that following that, they are resuming all stalled PAA investigations,” DAP’s Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, who acted as Abdul Aziz’s lawyer today, said.
Safwan and Fahmi are also being investigated for their part in the rally, Lim said.
