Lucky escape for six after boat overturns at Lido Beach
JOHOR BARU, June 22 — Six men, including a child were almost drowned after a boat they were on, to scatter ashes of a relative at sea, overturned at Lido Beach, fronting the Abu Bakar Mosque here, this morning.
A Johor Baru Civil Defence Department (JPAM) officer, Lieutenant Mohd Aziz Jupri said the boat left the beach at 9am but overturned 20 minutes later in the wake of a passing Singapore Marine patrol boat.
“All the victims managed to swim to shore using their safety vests when a motorised team and JPAM ambulance arrived at the scene.
“JPAM had treated them but one had to be sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital as he was weak. He is reported stable but traumatised,” he said when contacted by Bernama here, today.
This was the second time the activity of scattering ashes had threatened the lives of the public at Lido Beach. In mid-April, a man was found drowned while performing the same ritual at the beach.
State MIC chief Datuk M. Asojan had urged the state government to provide a safe temporary site for the Indian community to conduct the ritual as Lido Beach was no longer suitable for the purpose. — Bernama
