Pet monkey shot dead after biting six-year-old girl
ALOR SETAR, June 22 — A male monkey that had bitten a six-year-old girl on June 19 until her right calf was injured, was shot dead this morning.
In the incident at 5pm, Nur Syahadatul Fatehah Mohd Shahbudin was playing with her cousin and several friends before being attacked and bitten on the calf by the macaque until her calf bone protruded.
Kedah Wildlife and National Park Department director, Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the three-year-old monkey of the ‘Macaca Nemestrina’ species, was shot with the assistance of the villagers of Kampung Paya Mengkuang, Pendang.
“The monkey was believed to be a pet of one of the nearby local residents as during the incident it had a neck collar affixed to a chain. So, we are still investigating the identity of the owner,” he said in a statement today.
He added, the act of shooting dead the monkey was done with reference to Section 55(1) and Section 55(3) of the Wildlife Conservation Act (Act 716), which provides that the public can take their own actions by capturing or shooting dead the respective monkey but they must report their actions to the department, and those who fail to do so will be penalised. — Bernama
