SHAH ALAM: Parti Keadilan Rakyat has expressed confidence that DAP will not act unilaterally in seeking fresh elections to the state assembly in Penang, where it is the ruling party.

PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali said DAP needed the consensus of its allies in the Pakatan Harapan, namely PKR and Parti Amanah Negara, before making a decision.

Azmin’s remarks were reported by Bernama after a Warriors’ Day celebrations this morning in Selangor, where he is menteri besar.

In the early afternoon, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng announced that DAP had called off its plan to seek fresh elections, an idea which was broached soon after Lim was charged in court on two counts of corruption on June 30.

The DAP said the elections were one of two options in response to the two corruption charges. faced by Lim; the second was to wait for the next general election due by mid-2018 at the latest.

Azmin said that the PKR had announced last Tuesday that it had yet to be convinced of DAP’s proposals to seek an unscheduled election in Penang and that the party’s stand had been conveyed to Lim.

“I’m confident that DAP will not act unilaterally because this has been our principle and spirit in the Pakatan Harapan,” said Azmin, according to Bernama this evening.

At a press conference in George Town at mid-day, Lim said the DAP decision was made because PKR had wanted extra seats to contest, if fresh elections were called, and that the DAP had said it was “not feasible”.
