Gerakan: No-polls decision shows DAP ‘scared’ of PKR

GEORGE TOWN: The Gerakan has accused the DAP of being “scared of PKR”, its partner in the Pakatan Harapan coalition, when the ruling party in Penang decided not to pursue its proposal for fresh state elections.

Penang Gerakan vice chairman Oh Tong Keong said that even though DAP held 19 seats in the 40-member state assembly, while PKR has 10, DAP still had to follow what PKR wanted, because they were “scared”.

He told Bernama: “DAP is scared of PKR even though they have the upper hand in terms of seat count.”

Earlier today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said DAP would not go ahead with the proposal to dissolve the Penang state assembly and conduct early elections.

State elections have traditionally been held in tandem with a parliamentary general election, which is not due until mid-2018 at the latest.

Lim said the DAP decision was made as the proposal did not get the support of PKR which risked losing more seats than DAP.

Gerakan had previously announced that they would be contesting 13 seats and was positive that they would do better than in the previous election, when they did not win any of the seats contested.

The proposal for fresh elections arose when Lim was charged in court on two counts of corruption on June 30. He is expected to go on trial in November.
